Auto-renewal is not a review.
The Marketplace will usually re-enroll you automatically if you do nothing. That keeps you insured, and it is the only good thing about it. What it does not do is check whether the plan still fits:
- Your tax credit is recalculated against new benchmark plan prices and the current federal poverty guidelines. The amount you paid last year is not the amount you will pay this year.
- Your plan may have been discontinued and you crossed over into a replacement plan you never chose.
- Networks and drug lists change annually, the same way they do on Medicare.
- Your income estimate is a year old. The whole subsidy is built on that number, and it decides whether you owe money back at tax time.
The income estimate is the part that costs people money. Advance premium tax credits are paid on your estimate and settled against your real income when you file. Estimate low and you get a refund; estimate high and you repay some of it. Our subsidy repayment calculator shows what that looks like before you commit, and we reconcile it on Form 8962 when we prepare your return.
Bring these and we finish in one sitting.
Names, dates of birth, and who files together. Not who lives together: the Marketplace counts the tax household.
Pay stubs, last year's return, or an honest projection if you are self-employed. Closer is cheaper.
For each person applying. Lawfully present immigrants are eligible for Marketplace coverage, and we will tell you which document your status needs.
We check them against the networks and drug lists before you pick, not after.
Straight answers about what it costs.
Most people who buy through the Marketplace qualify for an advance premium tax credit, which is applied directly to the monthly premium. How much you get depends on your income, your household size, your age and your county, and only the Marketplace can determine it. A credit reduces the premium and nothing else: the deductible, the copays and the coinsurance are unchanged, and those are the numbers worth comparing between plans.
We will not print a premium on a web page. What you pay depends on your income, your household size, your ages, your county and the plan you choose, so any figure here would be wrong for almost everyone reading it. Run the calculator or call us and we will price it against your real details.
You pay us nothing. The carrier pays our commission when a plan is placed, and the premium is the same whether you enroll through us, through another agent, or on your own.
A life event opens a door for 60 days.
Outside Open Enrollment you need a qualifying life event to enroll. These open a Special Enrollment Period, and most of them last 60 days from the event:
- Losing job-based coverage, Medicaid or CHIP
- Marriage, divorce, a birth or an adoption
- Moving to a new area with different plans
- A change in immigration status that makes you newly eligible
- A change in income that changes what you qualify for
Sixty days sounds generous and disappears quickly. Call the week it happens, not the month after.
